How to Print a Digital Pet Portrait File in the UK

How to Print a Digital Pet Portrait File in the UK

Short answer: to print a digital pet portrait in the UK, choose the print size when you order the file, then take that file to an online print service, a high-street photo kiosk or a local print shop and print it at the same size (or the same shape, scaled up or down). Our digital files cost £15.99, come in 8x10, 12x18, 18x24 and 24x36 inch sizes, and arrive by email. The one thing that trips people up is shape: an 8x10 file will not fill A4 without cropping or white borders.

This guide walks through choosing the right file size, matching it to paper and frames, and when it is simpler to let us print it for you.

What do you get when you order a digital pet portrait?

When you choose "Digital File (Only sent via Email)" on a portrait such as our Pop Art custom pet portrait, our artists create the design from your photo and email you the finished file. There is nothing posted, so there is no delivery to wait for once you have approved it.

Here is how the timing works:

  1. You order, pick a style and size, and upload your pet's photo.
  2. You receive a preview by email within 24 to 36 hours.
  3. Once you approve it, the final file is sent to you by email.

The digital file is £15.99 whichever of the four sizes you pick, on styles including Pop Art, Modern Pet Vector and Classic Watercolour. Several of our styles list the file format as a .jpg, which every printer, kiosk and print website accepts.

Which file size should you choose before printing?

Choose the size you plan to print, or at least the same shape. Each size has its own proportions, and those proportions decide which paper and frames it fits without cropping.

File size (inches) Shape (width to height) Prints cleanly at Good for
8x10 4:5 8x10 inch, or 4x5 / 16x20 inch scaled Desks, shelves and standard 8x10 frames
12x18 2:3 12x18 inch, or 4x6 / 8x12 / 24x36 inch scaled Hallways, bedrooms and gallery walls
18x24 3:4 18x24 inch, or 6x8 / 12x16 inch scaled Living room walls
24x36 2:3 24x36 inch, or 12x18 inch scaled A statement piece over a sofa or fireplace

Because the price is the same for every size, it makes sense to pick the largest size you might ever want. A file made for 24x36 can also be printed smaller at 12x18, since both are the same 2:3 shape.

Can you print a digital pet portrait on A4 or A3 paper?

You can, but none of our file sizes is the same shape as A-sizes. A4 (210 x 297 mm) and A3 (297 x 420 mm) are roughly 1:1.41, which is longer and narrower than 8x10 (4:5) and wider than 12x18 (2:3).

That leaves you two choices:

  • Fit to page: the whole portrait prints with a white strip at the top and bottom or the sides. Trim it, or hide it under a mount.
  • Fill the page: the print fills A4 but loses a little from the edges. Check that your pet's ears, tail or name are not cut off.

If you know you want an A-size frame, the 8x10 file printed with a white border inside an A4 frame with a mount usually looks deliberate and tidy.

Where can you print a digital file in the UK?

There are three common routes, and each suits a different job:

  • Online print services: upload the file, choose the size and paper, and it is posted to you. Best for large posters and canvas prints, and you can usually choose matt or gloss.
  • High-street photo kiosks: found in many supermarkets, chemists and photo shops. Quick and cheap for small sizes such as 6x4, 7x5 or 8x10, often while you wait.
  • Local print shops: good when you want advice in person, a heavier art paper, or a large format printed on a proper wide-format printer.

Whichever you use, upload the original file from our email rather than a screenshot or a copy sent through a messaging app, as those can be compressed and lose detail.

What paper or finish works best for a pet portrait?

It depends on the style. Bright, bold styles such as Pop Art suit a satin or gloss finish that keeps the colours punchy. Softer styles such as watercolour often look better on matt or textured art paper, which cuts glare and feels closer to a painting.

If the print will sit behind glass near a window, matt paper helps reduce reflections. Before ordering a large print, it is worth printing a small test at a kiosk to check the colours look right to you.

Should you print it yourself or order a print from us?

Printing yourself is the cheapest route if you already have a frame or want an unusual size. Ordering a print means the portrait arrives ready, with no sizing decisions to make. Here are the current prices for the Pop Art portrait:

Size (inches) Digital file Poster only Unframed canvas
8x10 £15.99 £28.99 £55.98
12x18 £15.99 £39.98 £74.38
18x24 £15.99 £44.62 £105.04
24x36 £15.99 £55.82 £178.22

Framed canvases and framed posters in black or white are also available. Printed posters and canvases are delivered within 5 to 7 working days after you approve your design. You can browse every style in our custom pet portraits collection.

Still deciding between paper and canvas? Our guide to canvas vs poster print compares them side by side, and our framing tips cover choosing a frame once it is printed.

Quick checklist before you print

  1. Open the original file from our email and save it to your computer or phone.
  2. Check the size you ordered (8x10, 12x18, 18x24 or 24x36) and print at that size or the same shape.
  3. If printing on A4 or A3, decide between fit (white border) and fill (slight crop).
  4. Choose gloss or satin for bold styles, matt for soft styles or prints behind glass.
  5. For a large print, run a small test print first.
  6. Not sure the file suits the size you want? Email us at contact@furrandfamily.com before you print.

FAQ

How much is a digital pet portrait file?

£15.99 on styles such as Pop Art, Modern Pet Vector and Classic Watercolour, the same price for 8x10, 12x18, 18x24 or 24x36 inch.

How is the digital file delivered?

By email. You get a preview within 24 to 36 hours of ordering, and the final file is emailed once you approve the design.

Can I print an 8x10 file on A4?

Yes, but the shapes differ, so you will either get a white border or lose a little from the edges. An A4 frame with a mount hides the border neatly.

Which file size should I pick if I am not sure?

Pick the largest size in the shape you want. A 24x36 file can also be printed at 12x18, because both are 2:3.

Can I order a printed version instead?

Yes. Posters start at £28.99 and unframed canvases at £55.98 for 8x10 inches, delivered within 5 to 7 working days after design approval.
